Definition

The proportion of positive predictions that are actually correct—of all the things the agent said were true, how many actually were.

High precision means few false positives. Critical when false alarms are costly.

Formula

Precision = True Positives / (True Positives + False Positives)

When to Prioritize

  • Spam detection (don't mark good emails as spam)
  • Medical diagnosis (don't misdiagnose healthy patients)
  • Content moderation (don't remove legitimate content)
